The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

This book caught my eye because the lady on the cover looked like Daenerys Targaryen but this book turned out to be an unexpected thriller. The Good Girl was written by Mary Kubica in 2015.

Mia Dennett's date stands her up and at she meets Colin Thatcher in the same bar. Only later does she realise that bringing him home for a one-night stand was a mistake for several reasons. He kidnaps her and hides her in a secluded cabin in the dead of winter.

Her mother Eve and detective Gabe stop at nothing to find her. This ordeal causes emotional complications for all the characters, that no one could have foreseen.

What is good?

I didn't expect the main plot to progress the way it did. I couldn't process her father's character or guess his motivations. Most of all I did not expect "that" in the ending. I can't say more without spoiling the plot!

What could have been better?

After the scene is set and the characters are in place, the speed of narration slows down and the plot doesn't progress for a while. However this slower pace is needed to set the subsequent part of this story in motion, so I didn't mind this too much.

Recommendation

If you are in mood for a thrilling mystery where things are not what they seem and wish to do a few push ups with you brain, pick up this book!
