No time for goodbye

No time for goodbye was written by Linwood Barclay in 2007. It is a thrilling mystery that unravels layer by layer and you will mostly not be able to guess what really happened until it is unveiled by the author.

When Cynthia was fourteen years old, she woke up and her family (mother, father and brother) had vanished without explanations. She is pitied and also suspected but she finally moves on.

Twenty five years later, Cynthia is living with her little daughter and husband Terry when the past returns to the present. Inexplicable things happen around her and amidst mounting paranoia and fear she finally learns the truth only to wish she hadn't.

Why this book?

I enjoy a mystery best when I cannot guess the conclusion of the story. This was definitely one of those books. I could not guess whether or not Cynthia was innocent as the plot thickened.

Also I really liked her husband Terry, who worked as a school teacher and was there for her when it really mattered. It was easy to picturise their small town life.

What could have been better

The mystery was a little fantastical but worse things happen in real life, if the newspapers are anything to go by.

Recommendation

This book is a good choice for when you are in mood for a thriller or a mystery. It is hard to write a review for a mystery without revealing any spoilers! But I tried. 😉
