Don't judge Twilight too hard! 👩💘👨

There is so much hatred online for the Twilight series and it is mostly from people who have never read it. And people keep saying absurd things like - A man and his printer, still a better love story than Twilight?! Why so much hatred?

And it is not fair to compare Twilight to another fantasy series like Harry Potter, that is like comparing apples and watermelons. The Twilight series is a supernatural romance and doesn't have a larger scheme. But it is supernatural romance done well, so we should give that some credit.

I accept that the movies were not great but the books are not in the same league as the movies. And the movies did help to put faces to the characters, especially the ones described in superlatives in the books.

If you (have been living under a rock and) haven't heard of this series, it is the story of a human girl falling in love with a vampire and what follows as a consequence of that. It is a trilogy series and should be read in sequence.

Bella Swan moves to Forks, Washington from Phoenix and notices Edward Cullen, a high school classmate. Slowly she comes to know that he is more than a highschool teenager.  She is more fascinated than scared and enters his dangerous world but may have to pay a terrible price for it.

Why you should read this series?

1. Blame assignment

It is the easiest option to blame someone else for all our failures and problems. Once that's done, there is no need to accept any guilt and one can clearly avoid responsibility.

Bella takes the blame for everything on herself and doesn't even hold anyone accountable. While there is no need to be a martyr like her, it might be a good idea to introspect and look for problems at your end before pointing fingers.

2. Unselfish love

The concept of Friend zoning may have been coined in "Friends" but Jacob Black owns it in this series.

He is there for Bella when she needs him and even when she doesn't. She doesn't need to ask for his help, as he has already offered it to her. Everyone likes being loved back but it takes strength of character to love without getting the same kind of love in return.

Jacob's character is well rounded in the books but in the movies, he is portrayed as just the brooding hottie. In the books, he is incredibly sweet, positive and warm (pun intended), so much so that Bella thinks of him as her own personal sun.

3. Choosing to be good

We are all dealt different hands (of cards) in life. We don't get to choose what hand we get but we can choose how to act and to make the most of it.

Take Carlisle Cullen, a vampire who works as a doctor. He deals with blood everyday with calm because he has chosen to rise above the blood lust. In fact, he has used his sensitivity to the smell of blood as a diagnostic tool to find a victim of violence in need of assistance.

Even if we hail from bad circumstances, we can rise above and live a better life, simply by choosing that as our path.

4. My womb my choice

I am very much pro-choice, whether to keep or not, the choice is only with the woman who bears a child and no one can interfere with her wishes.

This is portrayed well in this series too, a lady knows what she wants to do with her body and what works best for her.

Be it keeping or letting go, it is not up to anyone outside of her to even have an opinion about this. Kudos to the author who has written about this aspect with strength of character.

5. Bully the bully strategy

All bullies are cowards underneath and fear those they have tried to oppress, all it takes is one to stand up to them. This is another concept that has been showcased very well in the series.

Force the bullies to face bravery and strength in opposition and the bully becomes the bullied. Self preservation instinct kicks in and what was meant to be an attack becomes a retreat.

If you fancy a supernatural romance, give this series a try. Keep an open mind and you might come to appreciate this book series as much as I did. 😊
