The Flatshare - sharing a flat with a roommate you never meet

Beth O'Leary published her modern day romance in May 2019 but it has a wonderful old twist, the magic of handwritten notes exchanged once a day until strangers become friends and something more.

Tiffy needs an inexpensive place to live in London after a breakup and Leon needs a little extra cash to help his family. They come to an arrangement to share a flat and a bed but never at the same time. He works nights and will occupy the flat during the day. She works a day job and will use the flat in the evenings and weekends.

They exchange notes first about typical roommate stuff like clearing the garbage, sharing leftovers and the important point of contention in any multi-gender household, the position of the toilet seat. Slowly, the tone of the notes change as they become friends.

They learn many intimate things about each other that comes as part of sharing a space. They even manage to help each other out with their problems with work and personal life, still without meeting each other.

Why should you read these novels?

In this day of instant gratification, most relationship thrive on text messaging. But in this novel, a relationship blooms through the charming exchange of handwritten post-it notes. This will take you back to another era where bonds are built slowly but surely. The anticipation for another quirky handwritten note at the end of a work day is just so charming.

The characters are quirky, especially Tiffy. In Leon's close circle are his brother and mother. Tiffy's family is mentioned only in passing as her friends are her true family, they are there for her in a way that even families rarely are. I live in London too, why don't I have friends like there? 💜

Both their jobs are also interesting and somewhat unusual adding an extra element of humanity to the story. There is even a narcissistic villain in this romance to create conflicts and drama.

This is an easy feel good novel with a lovely romance, amazing support circles and a glimpse into the lives of the employed but struggling young folks of London. I was able to finish this book in a day, a lovely day filled with humour and warm fuzzy feels. You should pick up this book too!
