💖 Crazy Rich Asians 💖

If you don't have time to read my full blog post or to read this book series, choose the simple and lazy option of watching the blockbuster movie from 2018, like millions around the world did. The reason I loved this movie was because it illustrated how to accept defeat gracefully, twice!!

In short, my review for you is that this series is no literary wonder nor is it an emotional roller coaster but it is very successful at showcasing the decadent lives of Crazy Rich Asians in a highly entertaining fashion. So if you are considering a book to read over your upcoming beach holiday, this is a perfect choice!

In a romcom plot with an entirely Asian cast, you will witness a lovely good looking couple navigate their way through each very different backgrounds.

I don't know if the second and third book will be made into movies at all but if you find the world of this movie entertaining, you will want to read the subsequent books. Bear in mind that this first movie's plot is not exactly congruent with the first book in the series.

Crazy Rich Asians was published by Kevin Kwan in 2013. The author is originally from Singapore but has lived in New York since 1995. In my opinion, this has made him understand how Eastern and Western cultures function and he has brought this out very well in the books. He published the second book called China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and the third book called Rich People problems in 2017.

Crazy Rich Asians:

Nick Young and Rachel Chu live in New York and work as professors. When Nick invites Rachel back home to Singapore for his best friend's wedding, Rachel is in for a few surprises.

He doesn't tell her about how rich his family is, how upper crest the Singapore society can be, the expectations his family have about his marriage and that he is perhaps the most eligible bachelor from Singapore. All of these surprises cause tension between the couple. Are they able to overcome their differences and find happiness?

China Rich Girlfriend:

In the second book in the series, you will get a glimpse into the high society life of  Beijing elite who are not just rich but are "China Rich"!

Kitty Pong, a minor character from the first book, gets more screen time as she learns how to pass off as old rich while actually being new rich.

Rich People problems:

In the third book, the Young family gathers in Singapore as Nick's grandmother falls ill and the entire clan has their eyes on her palatial residence at Tyersall Park and her substantial personal wealth.

We also see Nick's classy cousin Astrid face a mounting personal crisis as gracefully as she can under the circumstances.

Why should you read this series?

Rachel is a capable and intelligent lady who she never lets herself feel small or insufficient even when surrounded and overwhelmed by the rich Asian society. This is a lesson in self-worth and grace.

Nick, despite all the advantages he has had in his life, is wonderfully humble, loving and respectful to Rachel in a way that only romcom heroes can be, an example of a heir who doesn't act entitled.

While it doesn't quite play out that way in the books, in the movie, there is a conflict resolution that happens with utmost elegance by the winner and the loser. I won't say anymore! Shhh.

What could have been better?

To set your expectation right, this is a mainstream romcom movie/book series that has been done just right. Nothing more and nothing less.

Recommendation:

This is a perfectly good movie/book series for when you want something light, entertaining and enjoyable. Go for it and get the book trilogy!
