Author Colleen Hoover, the Queen of heart wrenching

No one writes male leads like Colleen Hoover. Though the characters are usually on the younger side, they are mature, achingly sweet, respectful, hot and so ardent. These men don't do things in half measures, be it pursuing their passion, friendship, family bonds, anger and definitely not love.

Any girl who is single and looking for a partner will experience a significant and unrealistic heightening in expectations after reading Colleen Hoover's books.  You will want to meet these men, get to know them and I won't be surprised if you want to marry them.

Nearly all of the author's work is high quality but I can recommend to you my favourites.

1. Verity - This is her latest book and it also has the top spot despite being unlike all of her other books (and it has a place in my Best books ever list). It's a thrilling mystery with minimal focus on the romance angle. The twists in the tale create palpable tension and I was glad I wasn't home alone reading this book as the story got to me.

As the plot unravels, you won't know if you like any of the leading characters. Comment below after finishing this book, which character do you root for.

2. It ends with us - I have read this book thrice and it can still make me cry, so be prepared for an emotional roller coaster. What starts out as a passionate romance between two strangers who meet on a city rooftop changes into a completely different plot.

The heroine appears to be an average girl but the strength with which she handles her situation makes my respect for her skyrocket. There are two male leads. While the hot doctor is appealing, Atlas is an epitome of what a boyfriend/friend should be like. He's the gold standard that all other heroes will get measured against.

The evolution of the heroine's relationship with her mom fills my heart with joy. And her relationship with her new best friend gave me reassurance that one can meet their BFF even in their thirties.

3. All your perfects - This book is about a crucial aspect of life not being understood as a choice by most but as a default option. A romantic relationship that starts out as sweet and nearly cheesy can turn so bitter and heart breaking in real life, if it is too weighed down with expectations.

While Atlas (hero of It ends with us) may be perfect, Graham is definitely the marriage material type of man who is rock solid even when the heroine feels broken. The reasoning behind the title says it all - If you throw light only on your flaws, all your perfects will dim.

4. November 9 - I'm amazed that this book hasn't been made into a movie yet because as you read, it will feel like a movie screenplay playing in your head. Two strangers meet on November 9, connect and part ways. They decide to avoid each other for the rest of the year and only meet once a year on November 9. This continues for five years!

Each meeting twists the plot into unexpected places and fills you with shock and regret about the circumstances. The hero is a sweet guy who rebuilds her confidence but has his own personal ghosts and she is struggling to make peace with her new normal. Watch their journey as they both make peace with their pasts.

5. Hopeless - This is one of Colleen Hoover's earliest books. When you start this book, you may think this is a sweet but cheesy high school romance, the heroine even has a gay best friend. But as the past unravels, you will realise this story is about something much darker.

This hero is another drool-worthy character who is strong and solid. There is another book called Finding Hope where the same story is told from the hero's perspective but I'd recommend reading Hopeless first as that is where the story/mystery unravels.

I really loved both their best friends especially Daniel. I think Colleen loved him too because she wrote "Finding Cinderella", a novella about this character.

Honourable mentions -

Without merit - While this is a novel about teenage characters, it doesn't exactly deal with young adult issues as Merit bears the full baggage of all of her large extended family. And pays a price for it.

Ugly love -  This book has a familiar plot line, baggage from teenage stops adults from having a normal life. But the way the story unfolds is engaging and despite his imperfect behaviour, the hero is rather appealing.

May be someday - If you have the appetite for a story where the connection between two people is so strong that cheating can nearly be justified, you've come to the right place. The circumstances, the songs and the supporting characters all add weight to this beautiful love triangle. I loved how the disabled characters have been portrayed, as completely normal.
